Windows 11, version 26H2 – the Windows 11 2026 Update – is now available for eligible devices running versions 24H2 and 25H2. Our recommendation for businesses: check your current Windows editions, validate a representative pilot group, and then deploy through a controlled update process. [1]
The useful question is not just “Can we install it?” It is “Who has checked that our people can still do their jobs afterwards?”
For Edmonton and Spruce Grove businesses using Microsoft 365, this is a good time to check whether Windows, Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID are being managed together. Buying a subscription and managing the devices that use it are different jobs.
What changes in Windows 11 26H2?
Version 26H2 shares its servicing foundation with Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2. Eligible devices can receive it through an enablement package: a smaller update that activates the new release instead of replacing the entire operating system. Microsoft describes a single restart in most scenarios. [2]
Several experiences previously held back by temporary commercial controls become enabled by default for eligible business devices:
- Windows settings backup for supported settings and Microsoft Store app lists. Existing administrator-configured policies remain respected.
- App-specific taskbar actions that provide shortcuts to supported app functions.
- File Explorer improvements affecting navigation and usability.
These are documented in Microsoft’s release guidance. [2]
A smaller installation is welcome. It is not a reason to skip testing the accounting software, VPN, printers or other tools your business depends on.
Should your business install 26H2 now? Start with your Windows edition.
Not every Windows 11 computer has the same deadline. Microsoft lists the following end-of-updates dates for existing releases: [3]
| Current version | Edition | End of updates |
|---|---|---|
| Windows 11 24H2 | Home / Pro | October 13, 2026 |
| Windows 11 24H2 | Enterprise / Education | October 12, 2027 |
| Windows 11 25H2 | Home / Pro | October 12, 2027 |
| Windows 11 25H2 | Enterprise / Education | October 10, 2028 |
A business running 24H2 Pro should prioritize its upgrade plan now. An organization already on a supported 25H2 release has more room to validate 26H2 deliberately. These dates do not describe the separate LTSC servicing channel. [3]
Where 26H2 is not ready for a particular device, evaluate another compatible, supported release rather than bypassing a safeguard or leaving the machine without a support plan. That could mean validating 25H2 as an interim step.
For 26H2, Home and Pro have a 24-month servicing period; Enterprise and Education have 36 months. Those periods run from Microsoft’s release date, not from the day you install the update. Delaying installation does not move the published support deadline. [4]
Where Microsoft 365, Intune and Entra ID fit into the update
The Microsoft 365 connection is device management: deciding which computers receive an update, checking their condition, and confirming that employees can still access company services.
Intune controls the target version and rollout experience
In Microsoft Intune, feature update policies control the Windows release offered to devices. Update rings govern behaviours such as restart experience, deadlines and active hours. The two need to be coordinated; a deferral or pause in one policy can interfere with the rollout you intended in another. [5]
For an administrator-led deployment, confirm eligibility, licensing, enrolment and the version available in your management tools before assigning the pilot. Do not treat a public release announcement as proof that every device is ready. [5]
Entra ID connects device compliance to access
Microsoft Intune can report device compliance to Microsoft Entra ID, where Conditional Access can use that status when allowing access to company resources. That is why an update test should include signing in and opening work services, not just reaching the Windows desktop. [6]
Avoid raising minimum-version requirements ahead of the deployment they depend on. Test any Conditional Access changes separately in report-only mode, and preserve appropriate emergency access exclusions. [6]
Device checks are only one part of access security. Our guide to Microsoft Entra authentication and passkeys covers the identity side.
Check your Microsoft 365 licences before buying more tools
Microsoft 365 Business Premium includes Microsoft Intune Plan 1 and Microsoft Entra ID P1. It is also an eligible licence for Windows Autopatch, subject to the applicable feature entitlements and deployment prerequisites. [7], [8], [9]
That does not mean every Business Premium tenant already has managed devices, configured update policies or an operational Autopatch deployment. Our starting point would be to review what you own and what is actually configured before recommending additional spending.
A practical Windows 11 26H2 rollout plan for a small business
For an office with roughly 5 to 25 users, we recommend keeping the process proportionate without making it informal. The following is an illustrative approach, not a Microsoft-mandated timetable.
1. Inventory the computers and the work they support
Record the Windows version and edition, device model, primary user, management status and business-critical applications. Include remote laptops and shared workstations, not just the computers you can see from reception.
Add business context: which machine runs payroll, which employee needs the VPN, and which printer or scanner would stop work if it failed? Let those dependencies shape the pilot.
2. Review policies before changing them
Check the current update policies and compare relevant security settings with Microsoft’s published Windows 11 26H2 security baseline. Treat baseline changes as a separate change to assess and test, not as something to apply blindly alongside the operating system update. [10]
For environments that use Group Policy, review the updated administrative templates and settings reference identified in Microsoft’s release notice. Do not assume that publishing a new baseline or template automatically updates your existing configuration.
3. Pilot real workflows on representative devices
In a small, reasonably uniform office, two or three devices may be a useful starting point. Add more where hardware or software varies. Include a typical workstation, a remote or VPN-dependent laptop, and a specialist workflow where relevant.
Our suggested test covers Outlook, Teams calls, OneDrive synchronisation, shared files, printing, scanning, accounting software and any browser-based business applications. Ask pilot users to complete real tasks. “It booted” is not an acceptance test.
4. Expand only when the pilot passes
Agree on the acceptance checks, restart window, support contact and recovery approach before wider deployment. Keep the most business-critical machines out of the first broad batch. Pause expansion when a material problem appears, and monitor Microsoft’s release-health information for compatibility safeguards. [1]
The schedule should follow operational risk and the support deadline – not an arbitrary rule to wait a fixed number of weeks after every release. Continue appropriate security servicing while validating the feature update.
5. Confirm the outcome rather than the assignment
Our completion check would include the installed version, recent management check-in, encryption and endpoint-protection status, access to company services, and user confirmation that essential work still functions. Record exceptions with an owner and a next step.
A policy assignment is an instruction. It is not your final evidence that the rollout succeeded.
Windows settings backup is not a complete business backup
The backup wording deserves care. Windows settings backup preserves supported settings and Microsoft Store app lists. Microsoft also states that the 26H2 default change does not remove the need to configure restore policies. [11]
Do not take that feature as confirmation that your local business data, mailboxes, OneDrive files, SharePoint content or specialist databases are recoverable. Those need their own protection and recovery checks. A settings restore and a business-data restore answer different questions.
Before the rollout, we recommend verifying your relevant backups, recovery access and device recovery procedure. Knowing that a backup job ran is less useful than knowing the information your business needs can actually be restored.
Microsoft 365, Intune and Windows support in Edmonton and Spruce Grove
PANDAROSE is a managed IT and technology services company headquartered in Spruce Grove, Alberta. We help organizations in Edmonton, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain, Parkland County and surrounding communities with Microsoft 365 and managed IT support.
For a Windows 11 rollout, the starting conversation can cover your device inventory, Intune configuration, Entra ID access policies, business-critical applications and recovery arrangements. The goal is a practical deployment plan, not a bigger stack of subscriptions.
That review can also identify whether an aging server or traditional domain is still serving a necessary purpose. We would treat any move to a different management model as a separate decision, not assume that a Windows update requires a complete infrastructure replacement.

Windows 11 26H2: frequently asked questions
Do we need new computers for Windows 11 26H2?
Do not assume a replacement programme is necessary. Microsoft provides an enablement-package path for eligible 24H2 and 25H2 devices. Check your actual hardware, software requirements and device eligibility before making purchasing decisions. [2]
Do we need Microsoft Intune to install the update?
No. Eligible devices can receive 26H2 through Windows Update. Intune is an option for centrally managing business deployments, with its own licensing and device prerequisites. For company-managed computers, follow the organization’s approved update process. [1], [5]
Why is Windows 11 26H2 not appearing on every computer?
Availability is staged, and Microsoft can apply compatibility safeguard holds. Your organization’s update policies and device prerequisites can also affect the offer. Investigate the reason instead of assuming that a missing update means something is broken. [1], [5]
Does the update replace our Microsoft 365 backup arrangements?
No. Windows settings backup concerns supported device settings and Microsoft Store app lists. It should not be treated as a replacement for the recovery arrangements protecting your business files and Microsoft 365 data. [11]
Can an IT provider manage our Windows 11 updates through Microsoft 365?
Yes. An IT provider can manage Windows 11 updates through Microsoft 365 using tools such as Microsoft Intune and Windows Update for Business. This can include setting update policies, testing updates with a pilot group, controlling rollout timing, monitoring deployment status, and troubleshooting devices that fail to update.
For businesses using Microsoft 365, this also allows Windows updates to be managed alongside device security, Microsoft Entra ID, Conditional Access, and other endpoint policies rather than treating each PC as a separate manual task.
